More and more of our community leaders are realizing that our community is facing apathy. The attendance at some black history month events was lower this year. This in spite of our numbers in the greater London area being arguably more than 10, 000.

Once again Black History Month is here. What started out as Negro History Week in 1926 in the month that both Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were born has grown into a month long celebration and reflection of the journey of former slaves and the African Diaspora thus far.

It ’s another new year, so compliments of the season and a happy new year to our readers and friends. It’s interesting that January 1, now marks the New Year but history tells us it was not always so. A little known fact is that the ancient Roman calendar started the year on 1 March, which is still reflected in the names of some months which derive from Latin: September (seven), October (eight), November (nine), and December (ten).
