He almost became a soccer player, a midfielder to be more specific, but Lewis Hamilton’s path to Formula 1 stardom almost seems pre-ordained. At 23, he is the youngest F1 world champion, a record previously held by former teammate, Fernando Alonso who held it at 24.

By now the world knows Usain Bolt is the reigning Olympic champion over 100 metres and holds both world and Olympic 100 metres records with a time of 9.69 seconds, the 200 metres at 19.30 seconds and, along with his teammates, the 4x100 metres relay at 37.10 seconds, all set at the just passed, 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. This achievement is no small feat. Bolt became the first man in history to set world records in all three at the same Olympics and the first man to win all three events at the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984. He is also the world junior record holder in the 200 metres (19.93 seconds), and Jamaican national record holder in the 200 metres (19.67 seconds). |

For a long time I have resisted writing about our esteemed Governor General, Her Excellency Michaelle Jean, partly because there already exists a body of work that I did not want to ‘tarnish’ and partly because there is already so much written about her, so much said and so much of her on our colour screens. But as Canada Day approaches, I could find no other person whose life story encapsulates what being Canadian is all about.
