Dear Editor,

February is black history month, a time for us to focus to remember the struggles and the achievements of black Canadians who have helped shape our incredible country.

While history remembers certain famous individuals, we cannot forget the efforts made by so many unknown women and men who fought for a common goal of inclusion we mark their achievements, we should be inspired by the fact that they have distinguished themselves through their unique contributions to the world, and not just through the colour of their skin.

This year we can rejoice in victories. The world has embraced the new American president, Barack Obama as a beacon of hope, and our own Governor-General, Micheale Jean remains a source of inspiration and admiration. As for myself,I only have to look to our three wonderful children whom my wife and I have adopted from Sudan. While their history is one of slavery and civil war, they have found a new life of hope and promise in Canada. They are a daily reminder not only of struggles past, but also of future possibilities and dream.

And so as we go forward,we strive to build upon these successes so that they transcend our borders. History is unfolding around us and we must continue to work in our communities and around the world with the goal of creating more just than human societies, free the prejudice and hate. The fundamental strength of our community is based on our diversity we ourselves strive to eliminate discrimination, let our unique Canadian experience be a model for others to follow. We have much to be proud of and I look forward to celebrating with you throughout Black History month.
