Homework - How Much is Enough? PDF Print E-mail

Parents, teachers and students are being asked for input on a perennial hot topic: homework.

A new online survey launched jointly this week by the Public and Catholic district school boards asks parents, teachers and students their views on whether there’s enough – or too much – homework being assigned. How much is too much? And do we even need homework at all?

Both the London District Catholic School Board and the Thames Valley District School Board have posted the surveys on their respective websites today.

“We’re interested in knowing how our stakeholders view the topic of homework,” said Laura Elliott, Executive Superintendent, Program Services, at the Thames Valley District School Board. “We are extending the invitation to all who might wish to make their views known on this important issue.

The online survey is a first step in a review of our homework guideline.”

A forum in May will bring together educators, community leaders and agencies involved with children and youth where the results of the survey will be presented. The London Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa is helping to organize this event.

"Homework is one of those topics about which nearly everyone has an opinion," said John Mombourquette, Senior Administrator of Program - Learning Services for the London District Catholic School Board. Both Boards hope that the survey generates some informed discussion that will help guide any future policies or guidelines on homework assignment.

There’s also an opportunity to comment outside of the survey by logging into a special homework blog found at londonpdk.wordpress.com
